Hospitality is the only sector in the Market Authority Index benchmark where experience is not just the product — it is the proof. And the data shows it.
Digital Scorecard’s Q2 2026 sector analysis of 14 fully assessed hospitality, experience, and tourism brands reveals an average Market Authority Index of 69.2 out of 100, with a certification rate of 64.3%. But the headline number understates what makes this sector distinctive. Five brands achieve Gold certification (80+), the highest concentration of any sector assessed — and they do it by excelling precisely where most sectors struggle.
The Proof and Validation outlier
Across the full Market Authority Index portfolio, Proof and Validation is consistently the weakest pillar, averaging 11.8 out of 25. Hospitality brands average 15.8 — a 34% premium over the benchmark. This is not a coincidence. Experience-driven brands generate proof organically: guest reviews, media coverage, awards, and social proof are built into the business model. The top five brands on this pillar — ICEHOTEL (22/25), Teeling Whiskey Distillery (21/25), Treehotel (20/25), Old Bushmills Distillery (20/25), and STHLM Tapas (20/25) — all have rich, verifiable evidence trails that AI systems and buyers can read.
Where the Gold brands cluster
The five Gold-certified brands — ICEHOTEL (86), Treehotel (83), Tullamore D.E.W. (82), Old Bushmills Distillery (81), and Teeling Whiskey Distillery (80) — share a common profile: strong authority scores paired with solid structural foundations. They are not just well-known; they are well-documented, well-governed, and digitally visible. When an AI recommendation engine evaluates hospitality options, these brands present a complete, verifiable picture.
Three of the five Gold brands are Irish whiskey distilleries with visitor experiences. This subsector — Distillery and Visitor Center — accounts for six of the fourteen brands assessed, and averages 69.8 on the Market Authority Index. The combination of heritage, regulated production, and public-facing experience creates a natural authority profile.
The structural gap
Not every hospitality brand benefits from this dynamic. The sector’s Structural Confidence scores vary widely (SD 15.3), more than any other sector. Mackmyra Whisky (SC 30) triggers the Structural Confidence cap, limiting its Market Authority Index to 65 regardless of authority. At the other end, Tullamore D.E.W. (SC 88) and Teeling Whiskey Distillery (SC 88) combine strong authority with robust corporate foundations.
For hotels, visitor centres, and restaurants without the regulatory scaffolding of spirits production, the structural side requires deliberate investment — filing compliance, transparent governance, and financial data that buyers and AI systems can verify.
What this means
When a traveller, a corporate event planner, or an AI-powered booking engine evaluates hospitality options, the brands that surface are the ones with visible, verifiable authority. The sector’s natural advantage in proof generation is real, but only the brands that have also invested in structural soundness are capturing the full benefit.
